philosophy of giving

At Blue Valley Baptist Church we are focused on one goal: changing lives…one person at a time. The simple fact, however, is that the church cannot do this without money. And God has decided that each church is to be funded by those who are a part of that local church. Simply put: our giving makes an eternal difference. We believe that personal giving is a strong reflection of our trust in God, and our maturity as followers of Jesus. The New Testament teaches that our giving is to be regular, sacrificial, proportional, and joyful.

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put l into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38 (ESV)

Questions about giving?

Ways to give

Regular

(give on a consistent regular schedule)

“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside …” 1 Corinthians 16:2 (ESV)

Proportional

(determine a percentage of your income in advance that you commit to give)

“So the disciples determined, everyone according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.” Acts 11:29-30 (ESV)“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper…” 1 Corinthians 16:2 (ESV)

Sacrificial

(give enough that it requires sacrifice)

“Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21:1-4 (ESV)“And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.” Acts 2:45 (ESV)“for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.” 2 Corinthians 8:2 (ESV)

Joyful

(give with a grateful and cheerful heart)

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7 (ESV)“…you received without paying; give without pay...” Matthew 10:8b (ESV)

Biblical stewardship is an acknowledgement that everything we have belongs to the Lord and that He has called us to live purposeful lives; investing our time, talent and treasure in the Kingdom of God.

This is a discipline that we are called to intentionally develop.... “Excel also in the grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7, 13-15 (NIV)
